Plant-Based vs Vegan: What's the Difference?
The terms overlap, but they are not always used to mean exactly the same thing.
Vegan has a clearer exclusion
A vegan diet excludes foods that come from animals, including dairy products and eggs.
Plant-based is used more broadly
In everyday nutrition and food writing, plant-based generally describes a pattern focused on plant foods; some definitions allow limited animal products. Check the context rather than assuming every “plant-based” label means vegan.
What matters in the kitchen
If you cook for someone else, ask about their actual dietary requirements. Labels alone are not a safe substitute for checking ingredients and preferences.
